Longtime park partner Discover Life in America (DLIA) has announced its first-ever Salamander Ball on Wheels! This fun, family-friendly event will take place at the Parkway Drive-in Theater in Maryville, TN, on Thursday, October 15, 2020. Activities will include live music by guitarist Bill Mize, videos highlighting DLIA’s work with the park, and a showing of the movie Hidden Rivers.

DLIA will also take this opportunity to present its annual Conservation Hero award to Richard Powers, Pulitzer Prize winning author of “The Overstory.” In the novel, Powers weaves his characters into the long lives of trees to illustrate how humans and forests are connected.

Tickets are $40 per vehicle and benefit DLIA’s scientific and educational work in the park. To purchase, visit DLIA.org or send a check to DLIA, 1316 Cherokee Orchard Road, Gatlinburg, TN 37738. 865.430.4757.

Since 1998, DLIA has worked with scientists, park staff and volunteers to document 10,000 new species of plants and animals in the Smokies and over 1,000 species new to the science books. Scientists estimate there may be as many as 40,000-60,000 additional plants and animals in the park still waiting to be discovered!
